Unhappy marriage? Blame the kids, claims eight-year studyIt may not come as a surprise to parents, but having children really does impinge on marital bliss.Nine in ten couples suffer a downturn in 'marital satisfaction' once the first child is born, according to an eight-year study. And relationship and stress problems are worse for those who live together before getting married and starting a family. The findings will ring true for millions of parents who found everything from their finances to their sex lives suddenly changed with a new arrival. But the researchers insist the findings should not be seen as a reason to remain childless as bringing children into the world can bring a 'whole dimension of family happiness'.Psychologists at the universities of Denver and Texas examined the marriages of around 220 couples over an eight-year period. They found 90 per cent suffered what they called a 'decrease in marital satisfaction' after the birth of a child.Childless couples suffered the same problems - only a little later, explained Denver University psychology professor Scott Stanley. He said: 'Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time. However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child.'The research, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found relationship problems were worse for those who had lived together first - possibly because long-established shared routines are more disrupted by new arrivals /200904/66929

Young, single men are fed up with being typecast as immature, insensitive and sex-obsessed, with a survey finding that the majority believe in having a soul mate, aren't scared of commitment, and say real men can cry.A poll of 70,000 men with an average age of 28 debunked many of the standard stereotypes to show that the modern man is driven by a sense of values, loyalty and family. The survey, by men's lifestyle website AskMen.com, found that 77 percent of respondents look for girlfriends with "wife potential" while 75 percent believe they have a soul mate and 69 percent would never cheat on their partner."These survey results will be surprising to many women, most of whom have a completely different perspective of what the average man thinks and feels," James Bassil, editor-in-chief of AskMen.com, said."The idea that young guys only want to be single and jump from girlfriend to girlfriend is not true at all."The online survey, conducted over a five-week period, found that six out of 10 men were fed up with inaccurate commercial descriptions of them.Bassil said the images of men on television and in advertisements had not changed for decades whereas the image of women in the media was always changing as their roles in the home and the workplace altered."In TV sitcoms and in adverts, young men are portrayed as immature, frat boys who are always trying to get around their wives or girlfriends finding out about their bad behavior. This is just not the case," he said. The survey by AskMen.com, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, found that 56 percent of men believed that being a good father or husband made them "manly."It also found that 75 percent admitted to crying over a woman while 57 percent of men cook at home and enjoy doing it."There really seems to be a revival of traditional values among men which goes against everything you see in the media," said Bassil. /200808/45959

A surge in the number of people getting fish pedicures on the high street has prompted a health warning. Experts are worried that the latest beauty craze – offered in scores of salons – could sp infection and disease. The Health Protection Agency says the practice is the subject of a major investigation.Experts are worried that fish pedicures could sp infection and disease. The treatment, which costs between ?10 and ?50, involves customers dunking their feet in tanks to have their dead skin nibbled away by scores of Turkish miniature toothless carp. The treatment involves customers dunking their feet in tanks to have their dead skin nibbled away by scores of Turkish miniature toothless carp But it has been revealed the pedicures using the garra rufa fish – which have been banned in 14 states in the U.S. – could sp infection from person to person through open wounds. Salons say they use UV-lit tanks which are constantly filtered to keep them clear of disease. Customer Max Langton, from North London, said: ‘I had a pedicure from one of the new high street chains. I was put off when a man sitting opposite me said he had something wrong with his foot and hoped the fish were enjoying it.’ He added: ‘We were asked if we had any fungal infections, but no one checked. /201103/127043

Workers who commute by car, bus or train to the office are more likely to suffer from stress and exhaustion, according to researchers from Lund University in Sweden. Workers who commute by car, bus or train to the office are more likely to suffer from stress and exhaustion, according to a study. Scientists assessed 12,000 employees aged between 18 and 65. They found that those who travelled to work by car or public transport reported higher levels of stress and tiredness compared to active commuters who travelled by foot or bicycle. It is now expected that the study, from Lund Unversity in Sweden, will encourage further investigation into the health impacts of commuting and the best forms of transportation. Researcher Erik Hansson said: 'Generally car and public transport users suffered more everyday stress, poorer sleep quality, exhaustion and, on a seven point scale, felt that they struggled with their health compared to the active commuters. 'The negative health of public transport users increased with journey time.' According to the Office for National Statistics, the average Briton commutes for 54 minutes every day. But now the scientists claim that the advantages of daily travel, such as higher pay or housing conditions, need to be weighed againstthe adverse health effects. It may also have a cost impact on industry. According to a CBI and Pfizer Absence and Workplace Health Survey, the UK economy lost 190million working days to absence last year, with each employee taking an average of 6.5 days off sick, costing employers £17billion. However researchers highlightthat the findings, published in the journal BMC Public Health, do not prove that commuting causes ill health and further research is needed. Income, family background and environmental factors are other variablesthat need to be considered. Hansson added that the findings would help to 'dressthe balance between economic needs, health, and the costs of working days lost'. /201111/159729
