To Chinese employers, a picture is worth a thousand-word resume. Nearly half of all employers in China like to check out online photos of potential candidates when hiring new team members, says a survey by global HR consultancy SHL. By contrast globally, just 26% of respondents around the world say they do the same. Chinese job ads are notorious for their overt, occasionally blasé descriptions of the preferred height and weight and gender-and sometimes even astrological signs─of candidates. #39;Must be caucasian [sic],#39; writes one laconic ad seeking an English teacher in Shenzhen. #39;Ages 18-35,#39; another typical ad runs. #39;Female candidates should be 158cm or taller, men 165 cm or above.#39; So perhaps it#39;s no surprise that so many Chinese employers like to consult online social media sites to track down photos of would-be employees. Still, Stuart Hedley, SHL#39;s managing director in Hong Kong, says that such a practice is worrisome. #39;You have to wonder, how valid is using someone#39;s photo as a predictor of future success?#39; says Mr. Hedley. Valid or not, previous surveys have found that discriminatory job ads in China are widesp. Last month, a study found that over 10% of job ads surveyed on Zhaopin, one of China#39;s most popular hiring boards, said they were explicitly seeking to hire a man or a woman. Among the ads recruiting women, 37% of the time, employers were also explicitly looking for attractive ones. Age was also seen as important, with age requirements surfacing in nearly a quarter of all ads. Foreign-owned films were less likely to discriminate based on gender than private Chinese firms or state-owned enterprises, according to the study, which was conducted by a pair of professors from UC Santa Barbara and Xiamen University. According to SHL#39;s findings, Chinese employers#39; enthusiasm for consulting online photos of candidates far outstrips that of their counterparts overseas. While 48% of Chinese employers seek out photos of candidates, just 21% of employers in the U.S. do, while in the ed Kingdom and Australia that figure is 10% and 9%, respectively.

These are changes that normally take millions of years of evolution. They have jumped from 60 grams to five kilos, and cats are now smaller than them.;The ;mutated rats; have been running rampant in the capital, as cats are scared off by their giant size and traditional poison appear to have no effect on them.To stop them storming into restaurants#39; backyards and scavenging public waste containers, the council has deployed ten sniper teams armed with infra-red sighted rifles.;We use chemical poisons to kill the rats during the day and the snipers at night, so it has become a 24/7 war,; the head of the environment agency, Mohammad Hadi Heydarzadeh, said.Rats#39; carcasses are burnt or buried in lime.So far 2,205 rats have been shot dead, but the war is far from being won and the council is planning to bring the sniper team up to 40. A harrowing competition is underway in England, with billions of dollars and hundreds of lives at stake. OK, that#39;s not true. But competitors from around the world gathered on Thursday for the annual competition to crown the world#39;s biggest liar. Each contestant is given up to five minutes to weave the best fib in the contest, which was founded in honor of 19th-century Bridge Inn landlord Will Ritson, who was reportedly legendary for his lies. Competitors gather at the Bridge Inn every year for the competition, a small pub in northwestern England. Anyone can take part in the competition. Well, almost anyway; the reporters note that lawyers and politicians are banned, citing ;an unfair advantage; in the proceedings. A study published this past July in the journal Evolution amp; Human Behavior found that nearly all lies are detectable through visible facial muscle reactions in the person telling a lie. ;Thus, while interpersonal deception often is highly successful, signs of covert emotional states are communicated clearly to the informed observer,; the study concluded. A bishop of Carlisle reportedly holds what may be the greatest lie of all time in the competition, simply stating, ;I have never told a lie in my life.;卡莱尔的一名主教据称说了比赛中前所未有的最大谎言,他只说了这句话:“我这辈子从来没说过一句谎话。”In 2003, Abrie Krueger of South Africa became the first non-Brit to win the competition. Ironically, Krueger was accused by some of cheating.2003年,南非的阿布里·克鲁伊格成为第一个不是英国人但却赢得撒谎大赛的人。 In 2006, comedian Sue Perkins became the first female to win the competition, telling a tale about people riding camels to work as a result of climate change.2006年,喜剧演员苏·帕金斯成为第一位赢得该大赛桂冠的女性,她讲述了一个人们因为气候变化不得不骑骆驼上班的故事。Last year#39;s winning entry came from Glen Boyland, who told a lie about competing in a snail-racing competition with Prince Charles.
