At least one million children in the ed States experience homelessness each year, putting them at increased risk for problems with their health, safety and education. Without a fixed address and with their family facing financial problems, homeless students often have difficulty registering for school, getting to class, having the proper supplies and finding a quiet place to do homework. But a school district in Dallas, Texas, where nearly half the students are homeless, is helping those pupils are overcome the odds. This past summer, single mother Angela Arnold moved halfway across the ed States, from North Carolina to Dallas, Texas, with her 9-year-old son Jordan. A veteran mortgage lender who'd been laid off, she expected to quickly find a new job here, where the economy’s better. So she rented a room by the week in an extended-stay motel. That was more than six months ago. When she enrolled Jordan in her neighborhood school, Arlington Park Learning Center’s counselor told her she was considered homeless. I’m like, 'Homeless? What do you mean homeless? I’m not homeless,'" says Arnold. And, like I said, I’ve never been put in a situation such as this. He said, 'Well it’s a homeless program you’re in because you don’t have a permanent address, you don’t have a residency. I thought ‘Wow, OK.’" Arnold is still looking for work while managing with her unemployment check. She is one of more than 100 Arlington Park parents considered homeless. The small school with 246 mostly black and Hispanic students sits close to Interstate 35, a busy highway. The county hospital, a women's shelter and several extended-stay hotels, where the rooms have small kitchens, are also nearby. Mobile phones have 18 times more bacteria than toilet handleThey are pretty much essential, but you may want to ditch your mobile phone for ever after ing this. The average handset carries 18 times more potentially harmful germs than a flush handle in a men's toilet, tests have revealed. An analysis of handsets found almost a quarter were so dirty that they had up to ten times an acceptable level of TVC bacteria. One of the phones in the test had such high levels of bacteria it could have given its owner a serious stomach upset. While TVC is not immediately harmful, elevated levels indicate poor personal hygiene and act as a breeding ground for other bugs. The findings from a sample of 30 phones by Which? magazine suggest 14.7 million of the 63 million mobiles in use in the UK today could be potential health hazards.Hygiene expert Jim Francis, who carried out the tests, said: 'The levels of potentially harmful bacteria on one mobile were off the scale. Doom-laden warnings issued in 2008 and early that commercial real estate would be the “next shoe to drop” have not come to pass. Opportunistic investors hoping to cash in on the sale of distressed assets have been largely disappointed. Governments have intervened less than they have in housing (there are fewer votes in office buildings and shopping centres). “Commercial real estate was not at the heart of the crisis,” says a big fund manager in Germany. Investors’ interest in the asset class is growing, thanks in large part to the extreme macroeconomic environment. Near-zero interest rates make the yields on offer from property look attractive. The cashflow from tenants is more stable than that from equities, where values zigzag day by day and dividends can suddenly be suspended by the management. And unlike many types of bonds, property is seen as a useful hedge against inflation because rental agreements can be renegotiated with tenants to reflect rising prices. Bulls note that Norway’s 3 billion state pension fund, one of the world’s largest sovereign-wealth funds, is starting to allocate money to property. It made its first real-estate investment in January, spending £452m (3m) on properties in London’s Regent Street.

He said he and his organization have worked for 36 years for the alleviation of poverty. He said BRAC, which was launched in Bangladesh in 1972, now reaches more than 110 million people in nine Asian and African countries with its holistic approach toward development. He said BRAC will use the .5 million prize money to help poor people in southern Sudan. After 20 years of conflict in southern Sudan, the Sudanese peace, fragile peace is still holding and people have come back to their villages," he said. "We are now trying to organize them in providing them health care and education and micro-finance, particularly poor people having no access to education or health care. We are trying to provide that." BRAC won out over more than 225 nominees. A member of the prominent panel of international jurors, Princess Salimah Aga Khan, said it was a challenge to select an organization that has accomplished something unique in the humanitarian field. BRAC filled so many areas of excellence. It would be hard to find another organization that has accomplished so much, in so many areas," she said. "Literally millions, 110 million people have been helped out of poverty. I, and the other jurors, were especially moved by the organization's emphasis on women. BRAC sees women as change agents, not for their families, but for their communities as a whole." Today, BRAC's programs reach three quarters of Bangladesh's population of 153 million people through the efforts of more than 110,000 micro-finance officers, teachers, health staff and enterprise managers. In recent years, BRAC has expanded its programs globally and now has operations in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda, southern Sudan, Liberia and Sierra Leone. U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., late Saturday near his slain brothers, President John F. "The world will long remember their son Edward as the heir to a weighty legacy; a champion for those who had none; the soul of the Democratic Party; and the lion of the U.S. Senate - a man who [whose name] graces nearly 1,000 laws, and who penned more than 300 himself." Edward Kennedy died of brain cancer Tuesday at the age of 77. Ted Kennedy Jr. recalled an incident shortly after he lost his leg to cancer when he 12 years old, when his father helped him climb up an icy, snow-covered hill. And he lifted me up in his strong, gentle arms, and said something I will never forget," Ted Kennedy Jr. said. "He said 'I know you can do it. There is nothing that you can't do.'" After the funeral, Senator Kennedy's body was flown to Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, and his motorcade drove his casket to the U.S. Capitol, for a final farewell from U.S. lawmakers, staffers and hundreds of citizens who lined the streets. Edward Kennedy's burial alongside his brothers at Arlington National Cemetary was the closing of a long, full life, heading a family marked by tragedy and triumphs.

London Mayor Boris Johnson says the leaders hope to agree on ways to end the world's "endless addiction to the internal combustion engine." South Korean scientists are proposing a "middle of the road" solution. At South Korea's leading technology university, the electric car of the future does not require a pit stop to charge or change batteries - because it draws its power right from the road itself. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, headquartered in Daejeon, about 150 kilometers from Seoul, is working on a vehicle it calls "OLEV." That stands for Online Electric Vehicle. At this point, it looks like a souped up golf cart. But engineering professor Cho Dong-ho, the manager of the OLEV program, says some revolutionary technology is on board. This model [has] a power supply system installed under the ground," said Cho. An experimental track at KAIST features power cables buried under a strip in the road, over which the car passes. Magnetic receivers on the bottom of the car siphon power over the airwaves, with no physical connection, recharging the battery. The power charging strips are designed to be installed at intersections and other places where traffic slows down naturally, so vehicles can derive the maximum charge. Professor Cho says the technology will have big benefits - but will take some time to implement. He says widesp use of the technology will automatically solve many of Korea's environmental and fuel scarcity problems. The key challenge, he says, will be building a reliable and extensive infrastructure. He says if current trials are successful, a field trial is planned in the South Korean capital. After that, other local cities will get a chance to adopt the online electric vehicle. One of the key attractions of the model is that it eliminates the need for countless individual charging stations for each vehicle, or the need to swap out batteries on a continual basis. Instead, the online road strips are connected to larger charging stations, which South Korea intends to charge mainly through nuclear plants. Cho says the online vehicle is a cost-effective solution for mass transit planners. He says the main competitors of this electric vehicle are electric subways and trams. However, establishing subways costs about million a kilometer, and about million per kilometer for a tram line. By contrast, he says online electric vehicle power strips will cost only about 0,000 per kilometer. Cho says the technology has proven safe to use around people and machinery in all experiments so far. Future power strips will be designed big enough for use by large buses at first, then by smaller online electric cars later on. Each of the vehicles are designed to be able to switch to "battery mode," so they can depart from the charging strips and drive anywhere at all for a limited period of time. 05/70535 It’s a hard frontier for global investment and both China and the US wanna a stake. So far this year, President Obama has visited Ghana and Egypt. Secretary of State Clinton wrapped a 7-nation African tour. President Hu stopped in Mali, Senegal, Tanzania and Mauritius. Premier just attended China-Africa Forum in Egypt. As the son of Kenyan, President Obama may have won African hearts. But China’s deep pockets have been winning over African governments. “The US is aly on the backfoot in Africa. The American public may not be terribly aware, but basically most of Africa thinks it's a great thing that China has come into the game.”In the last year, China has struck deal after deal to build infrastructure in Africa in exchange for natural resources. Critics say China’s actions have propped up dictatorships in Sudan and Zimbabwe. But leaders indicate Africa will take money from anyone who’s giving. “Foreign direct investment has no fix allegiance or nationality. It goes where it is most welcome. ”China recently pledged 10 billion dollars in loans to Africa. China’s foreign direct investment in Africa is up almost 80% this year. Trade has multiplied 10 times this decade to 107 billion dollars.Huge African communities have formed in China, filled with traders and entrepreneurs who want to realize the Chinese dream. “There’s a huge number of students that come from Africa in scholarship funded by the Chinese government, and there’s a lot of businessmen that come from Africa buy goods and do trading.”Aside from supporting increased agriculture investment, analysts say President Obama has yet to solidify his Africa strategy, but stress it’s not necessarily a competition but a chance for the US and China to cooperate and make vital changes on the developing continent. “Clearly there is a great potential there. We should put the interests of the African people in the center of these considerations.”But the vast opportunities in Africa are not without challenges. Poverty, corruption and instability are constantly changing the game. The question is how the US and China choose to play.
